New A-Class: prepared to roll…

A large step-up in quality is among Mercedes-Benz’s top priorities once the new A-Class is launched this summer time. Sources indicate an ‘extra quality and a feeling of elegance’, as Benz addresses among the primary criticisms of their tiniest model: cabin quality.

The brand new A-Class, which will not be seen until late summer time, is really a more ‘grown-up’ version of the present vehicle, helped by an additional 230mm long and 45mm wide within the current lengthy-wheelbase model.

Only a single wheelbase is going to be offered this time around. Since the new vehicle is longer, a lengthy-wheelbase model is considered unnecessary – and Merc doesn’t wish to strike the toes of their small-vehicle cousin, the brand new Smart Forfour, having a shorter model. Similarly, the sliding rear seat is dropped since the new vehicle has enough cabin space to not require a legroom/boot capacity compromise. Merc has maintained exactly the same crash protection design because the current vehicle, using the engine sliding beneath the seats in case of any sort of accident.

Three gas engines is going to be offered – 1.5, 1.7 and a pair of.-litre – and elevated stroke should mean a noticable difference in torque. The diesel ranges from 1.7 to two. litres, jumping from no more than 94bhp close to 140bhp, although lower-power versions may also be available. A CVT auto transmission is going to be offered plus the manual, and Mercedes insiders say its new system can give economy to rival a handbook. Expect around one out of three buyers to consider this method. Sales won’t begin in the United kingdom until the start of 2005, and also the five-door will ultimately be adopted by as much as four other models, having a three-door and small-MPV in development along with a cabrio and 4×4 also around the drafting board.
